WATCH | VW's SA-bound Golf 8 scores a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating

Volkswagen will officially launch its eighth iteration of its popular Golf in SA next year and potential buyers will be pleased to know that the hatch scored a five-star rating in recent Euro NCAP crash tests.

It scored a 95% adult occupant and a 89% child occupant rating, replicating pretty much the same figures as the previous generation Golf.

Headed to SA

With the worrying amount of crashes happening on South African roads, these results will restore confidence, if any was needed, in an already-popular model.

Other cars that also claimed a five-star rating was the Audi Q8, Ford Puma and Nissan Juke.

Volkswagen South Africa will launch the eighth generation Golf in GTI form first in late 2020, TSi and Golf R models will follow.

Volkswagen confirmed the Golf will be available in two, four-cylinder petrol engines with 66kW and 81kW, two, four-cylinder diesel engines with 85kW and 110kW. There will also be a five-model hybrid line-up with power ranging from 81kW all the way to the sporty 180kW GTE version.

It is still unconfirmed as to which other models will be available locally. More information will be released closer to its official launch in South Africa.
