Classic cars from the 80s - These three Porsche sports cars will get your heart racing

accreditation

If there is one automaker renowned for building impressive sports cars, it has to be Porsche.

Founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1931, the automaker quickly established itself as a player not to be taken lightly. As the years progressed, Porsche also brought impressive cars to market and carved itself a decent piece of the sports car pie.

While in the modern era we are treated to near-impeccable Porsche products, the last few decades preceding this one saw cars that, one could say, defined the automaker’s stance in the industry.

We scoured through the AutoTrader classifieds and came across three classic Porsche sports cars that roamed the 1980s. While they may not be as imposing as their modern-day counterparts, these cars are no less still beautiful to look at.

1984 Porsche 928 S - R199 995

Built in Germany between 1978 and 1995, the Porsche 928 was originally designed with the intent of replacing the near-immortal 911. Versions for both the European and American markets rolled off the production lines, and each version had its trait and character.

The 928 was a grand tourer of sorts and had a 2+2 seating configuration. Though the two seats in the rear weren’t very adult-friendly, it could be folded down to increase the luggage area.

In the 1984 model year, this Porsche 928 arrived in two guises: 928 S for the North American market and 928 S2 for the UK. In the UK, the car’s 4.7-litre V8 engine produced 228kW and was fitted to a four-speed automatic gearbox. The top speed was rated at 235km/h (for the US market), although now it might be slightly slower.

The 1984 model also benefitted from a safety-related change to the front suspension lower ball joints in September 1983. The North American version of the Porsche 928 had its torque tube shortened, which partly explains why this car only developed 174kW.

This car has 108 000km on its odometer.

1982 Porsche 928 - R199 900

At the end of 1982, Porsche replaced the 4.5-litre petrol engine in the 928 with the 4.7-litre mentioned above. And with the engine change came a name change from 928 to 928 S. The model shown here, however, is fitted with a 4.5-litre engine.

Again the car was produced for both the UK and North American markets. For the former, power was rated at a decent 221kW, while for North America, it was 177kW.

This car features a vibration damper on both manual and automatic gearbox options, and a gear lock was added to the manual ‘box.

Over the last 38 years, this car has done an average of 530km per year, which brings its total driven kilometers to just over 202 000km.

1982 Porsche 924 - R129 900

The Porsche 924 was first sold in 1976 and stayed in production for more than a decade. Like the 928, it too is a 2+2, but the drivetrain layout meant that it was a front-mid engine vehicle.

Built as a venture between Porsche and Volkswagen, the 924 had a kerb weight of only 1080kg! The 924 came with two engines, a 2.0-litre and a 2.5-litre. Regarding power, the American-market 924 produced 82kW in 1980, whereas the European models made do with 92kW. Both a manual and automatic gearbox were mated with the engine.

The 924 pictured here had, according to the dealer, done only 54 513km. This calculates to 1435km per year!
